Renewal Requirements: Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct eLearning Module

All registrants of the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta are required to complete the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta’s Protecting Patients from Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct eLearning module prior to practice permit renewal in August/September of 2025.

The Health Professions Act of Alberta requires that Colleges establish a patient relations program that includes measures for preventing and addressing sexual abuse of and sexual misconduct towards patients by registrants.

The patient relations program must include educational requirements and guidelines for regulated members.

Due to serious nature of these complaints, the related client harms, and the continued high number of complaints of this nature, all registrants are required to complete an eLearning module specific to the topic of sexual abuse and sexual misconduct.

Successful completion of the module is mandatory, pursuant to Sections 135.6 and 135.7 of the Health Professions Act. Physiotherapists on the General Register, and physiotherapist interns on the Provisional Register will not be able to renew their practice permits in August/September 2025 until they have completed the sexual abuse and sexual misconduct module.

You must successfully complete all the content and the quiz at the end of the module. You may choose to save or print a certificate of course completion for your own records. The College of Physiotherapists of Alberta does not require a copy of the certificate.

The module will take approximately one hour to complete. You will not be able to save your progress on the module and return later. Set aside sufficient time to complete the module in one sitting. For the best experience, use a computer or tablet to complete the module.
