Part 8.2 of the Health Professions Act requires regulatory Colleges to establish a patient relations program. Part of this patient relations program includes mandatory education for regulated members.
In efforts to address the increasing number of sexual abuse and sexual misconduct complaints, the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta developed Protecting Patients from Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct eLearning module.
The CPTA has decided that the completion of this eLearning module will be mandatory for all registrants on an annual basis, starting from the 2025-2026 renewal period. This requirement was supported by the CPTA Council during their December meeting. By requiring this training annually, the CPTA aims to reinforce the importance of maintaining a professional, safe, and ethical environment for patients, focused on preventing sexual abuse and misconduct in physiotherapy practice.
