Important Information for Physical Therapist Employers

Physical therapist employers play a key role in helping ensure the delivery of competent, quality and ethical physical therapy services. To help employers continue this vital role, we have created an ‘employers section’ on the website with links to information and resources relevant to the employment of Alberta physical therapists including:

  • Registration and licensing in Alberta – new applicants sections contains information
on Alberta license requirements, use of titles, license types and license renewal dates.
  • Professional practice – members' section contains resources related to all aspects of
a physical therapist’s practice including legislation, practice standards, guidelines and
code of ethics, resource guides etc. All registered physical therapists have copies of
     and/or access to this information.
  • Authorised activities – information on special authorisation required to perform
     needling and spinal manipulation.
  • Verify registration status – check if a physical therapist is currently registered
with the College and if their license has any conditions attached.
  • Continuing competence program – physical therapists are expected to pursue
     ongoing professional development activities.
  • Mandatory reporting – physical therapists are legally obligated to report suspected
child abuse/neglect and abuse of adults in a publicly-funded facility/program. When
physical therapists are regulated by the Health Professions Act, mandatory reporting
will also include an employer’s obligation to report a termination, resignation or
suspension of a physical therapist employee due to unprofessional conduct.
